Wareham’s old centre displays Georgian houses built after a great fire of 1762 but on a grid-like street pattern dating back to the Romans.

Surrounded by rivers, marshes, and Poole Harbour, the town has had little chance to sprawl.

The church of St. Martin-on-the-Walls is the most complete example of a Saxon church in Dorset.    Wareham has been a market town since the 1400s, and still holds its markets on Thursdays and Saturdays.
