Seaton is a bit like a miniature Sidmouth, with an attractive pedestrian shopping area at its centre. It was once the endpoint of a Roman road, the Fosse Way, that came all the way from Lincoln and down the valley of the Axe.

Across the river’s estuary is the village of Axmouth, and in the other direction a path over the top of a spectacular cliff leads to Beer, lodged in a ravine with a stream running down the middle of its street and fishing boats drawn up on the beach.
